Tropical Thunder

A beer label that grew into a brand.

Tropical Thunder began as a craft beer label inspired by 1980s arcade culture, synthwave aesthetics and cult action cinema. What started as a single illustrated can design evolved into a fully realised independent beer brand with merchandise, ecommerce, retail distribution and a growing community identity.

The aim was not simply to design a beer label. The project set out to build a brand world that felt nostalgic, cinematic and instantly recognisable.

The Concept

Retro-futurist, loud and instantly recognisable.

At the centre of the artwork is an illustrated tropical mercenary character surrounded by neon sunsets, palm trees and grid-based horizon lines.

The identity deliberately moved away from minimal craft beer trends in favour of bold illustration, personality and high visual impact. The result was a product people immediately recognised, photographed and shared.

Building the Brand System

More than a can.

The project expanded far beyond a single can design and developed into a complete visual ecosystem spanning physical products, digital experiences and campaign photography.

Every touchpoint reinforced the same retro-futuristic identity, helping the project feel like a genuine independent beer brand rather than a one-off packaging exercise.

Community & Cultural Identity

Designed to be held, worn, photographed and shared.

One of the most enjoyable parts of the project was watching people unexpectedly connect with the brand. The visual language travelled from fridges and bar tables to hoodies, retail shelves, gyms, living rooms and local stockists.
